Union Chief Engineer


The Role The Union Chief Engineer is responsible for directing all engineering operations, providing technical expertise, and managing vendors and subcontractors within the Engineering and Technical Services function.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Operational Management: Managing daily operations, assigning work orders, and providing technical and procedural training to staff and subcontractors.
  • Maintenance Programs: Formulating and implementing a comprehensive preventive maintenance (PM) program to maximize the life and efficiency of building machinery and systems.
  • System Monitoring: Continuously monitoring critical building systems (fire alarms, HVAC, plumbing) to ensure optimal performance and prescribed environmental conditions are met.
  • Oversight & Quality: Overseeing and inspecting work performed by engineering staff, confirming completion, full functionality of equipment, and optimal client space working condition.
  • Emergency Response: Responding effectively to emergency situations and summoning additional assistance as required.
  • Leadership & Innovation: Applying extensive, diversified knowledge to create innovative technical solutions and driving the direction of programs and projects.
  • Compliance: Ensuring regulatory/compliance standards are met, with essential experience in Joint Commission and Healthcare environments.
Candidate Profile The ideal candidate will be an expert technical leader with a strong track record of successful team management and critical system maintenance.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
  • Education: High School Diploma, GED, or trade school diploma, combined with 8–10 years of job-related experience. A combination of experience and education will be considered.
  • Leadership: Prior shift manager or supervisory experience is preferred, with a proven ability to manage a team.
  • Technical Expertise: Must possess multi-dimensional, conceptual, and innovative thinking to solve complex technical problems.
  • Essential Experience: Must have experience in regulatory/compliance environments, specifically Joint Commission and Healthcare.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including stooping, standing, walking, climbing stairs/ladders, and lifting/carrying loads of 50 lbs or more.
  • Skills: In-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office products and expert organizational skills.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Location: This position is based in San Francisco.
  • Pay Rate: The negotiated union rate for this position is $94.76 per hour. (Please refer to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement regarding pay scale).
